King Arthur tells of two warring tribes in violent but magical conflict. Henry Purcell's fast-paced tale of enchantment will reflect these divisions, as African and European vocal techniques are juxtaposed and intertwined in a new, cutting-edge staging.
In recognition of the pressing need to preserve, foster and encourage African as well as European performance practice traditions, King Arthur will be set in an African context and will interweave the music of Purcell with traditional Xhosa music. As part of the preparation, a series of choral training workshops and international exchanges will focus on both European baroque and traditional African music. Conductor Morten Schuldt-Jensen will direct the Leipzig Immortal Bach Ensemble and the Cape Festival Choir.
